Form:

Deciduous shrub, 12-30 inches tall, spreading vigorously from
|
rhizomes; not hairy.
|
Leaves:
|
Oval to oblong but wider toward tip, and leaf base tapering to
|
stalk. Usually coarsely toothed above middle; dark green above, pale below.
|
Flowers:
|
Tiny and dull white, often with pale pinkish or lavender tinge,
|
in dense nearly flat topped clusters. Fruits are 5 pod-like
beaked capsules, joined at base.
|
Habitat:
|
Widespread in dry to moist forests, open dry rocky slopes
|
and clearings.
|
Season:
|
June-July.
|
