Brown’s Peony

6-20 inches tall. a plant forming a tangled mass of leaves up to 30

inches across., with flowers below leaves.

Leaves:

Alternate on 8-24 inch stem, leaves compound, divide once or
|
twice pinnately with deep lobes cut into leaflets. Covered with waxy glaucus coat.

Flowers:
|
2-4 inches across, sits at end of stem, usually facing
|
ground, hidden by leaves. Each flower has an outer ring of five
or six oval leathery sepals- green or reddish. Second ring of five to
ten slightly longer petals varies from white to maroon or bronze, often
rimmed with bright yellow. A multitude of yellow stamens encircle a prominent
five-parted superior green ovary.
