Greenbelt Meeting Minutes
July 26, 2008

The Greenbelt Committee met in the Park on 7/26/08 at 8:00 a.m.  Those in attendance were: Chairman Steve Malmstead, Mary Bunney, John and Carolyn Cross and Sharyl Nelson.

At our June meeting the following items were passed by the committee:

Have new Wildflower Brochures printed - Pam Nicklas would do
Have some new signs made for the trails - Pam Nicklas will order
Hire Tony to help us and pay him out of the Greenbelt budget - give him a list of things we want accomplished (We did discuss what other options we might have to get someone to help-like Boy Scouts or church groups who we would donate to since we can't accomplish much with the few people that show up for the work parties)

The June work party worked on the Bluebell Trail.  The workers were Steve Malmstead, Pam Nicklas, Michelle (from Appaloosa), Mary Bunney, Bobbie Lambert and Sharyl Nelson.

Today we passed our Budget proposal for 2009.
    New Trails - $500
    Signs - $500
    Chipper rental - $1200
    Labor costs - $1400
    Maintenance of equipment - $200
    Pool Garden - $300
    Misc. Costs(i.e. printing) - $100       Total $4200

We also want to ask the Board about surveying, should it be a line item or in the Greenbelt Budget.  Also, should we be looking into a sprinkler system for the ball field or is that covered by the Buildings and Grounds Committee.

Igor Malcevski wants to give the Greenbelt Committee some Iris plants.  We still have lots of knapweed on people's property on Morgan and Palomino.  Chuck Summers is going to clean-up the Greenbelt behind his house and Steve will meet with him today to see what he wants to do.  Bob Melson will reserve the chipper for our Oct. Work Party.

A  Motion was made and carried that we would get Bob Melson a gift certificate in appreciation of all the volunteer hours he has worked for the Greenbelt.

Today we are working on the Bluebell Trail spreading some more bark and also the river access lot.  In addition to the committee members present that are working, Greg and Loren Hendrickson and their daughter Brenna joined us.  It was discussed that Brenna could use her work on the Greenbelt for community service for high school.

Plans for the Aug. Work Party is to thin and clear the Bridge, Lupine and Pinedrop trails for chipping.

Work List report from Bob Melson:

  1. Tony worked for two hours after our last Greenbelt day which was on Sat June 28th.
    1. We went up with Mary Bunney to inspect area for benches on new Bridge trail and the upper water tank trail.  Subsequently, we went back and cleared areas for both benches and the areas to
          put in new posts.
    2. We also inspected the trees that had been pink flagged and marked off an area to put the tree limbs until we can get them chipped up.
    3. We walked Lupine to see where we could best drop off bark for the next work party.
  2. Tony worked two more hours on Friday July 18th.
    1. We dug up four Greenbelt marker posts that had been put in the wrong place.  We dug them up cement and all and replaced the dirt in the holes.
    2. We moved the four poles up to the new Bridge trail and put two in at the beginning of the trail right off of Thoroughbred Lane and two more right next to the Ponderosa Sign.
    3. In preparation for the new poles next to the sign, we cut down and limbed a tree that was blocking the North entrance to the trail.
  3. Tony worked two more hours on Saturday, June 18th.
    1. We put together two new benches for the trails.
    2. We hauled bench number one onto the Bridge trail and cemented it in overlooking the river. (quite an exquisite view!)
    3. We hauled the 80 pound bag of cement, the 75 pound bucket of water and all the needed digging equipment in 100 yards to the site.  I am a bit sore today.
    4. We hauled bench number two into the upper tank site and did the same thing and cemented it in.
    5. Again, we cleaned up around each of the areas where we installed benches.
    6. Marisha put up the sign that you requested so hopefully you will get a good turnout next Saturday.

As I mentioned before, if everything gets done with the dust control this week, Tony will have the dump truck to haul bark to wherever you want it.  It is quite large so he will not be able to get real close to the trail heads.

Meeting adjourned to work party at 9:00.

Respectfully submitted,
Sharyl Nelson, Minutes Taker
