GREENBELT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2009
Meeting called to order by chair Steve Malmstead @ 8:05. Committee members John Cross and Sharyl Nelson were also in attendance.
Committee discussed summer trail projects. We will begin work on two trails this summer:
- Irrigation Ditch trail on Primitive Park (Camp 12). We will work both sides of the road from the Ponderosa sign (Campbell easement) to Thoroughbred Lane. Much limbing, clearing, and cleaning needed. In addition, we’ll establish a trail that parallels the irrigation ditch to the border of Ponderosa property.
- Vine Maple Trail off Stirrup – this trail was discussed last year as well. We’ll begin at the entrance off Stirrup and add posts and signs. Sharyl Nelson will check with Dean Wilkins regarding signage for entrance.
Committee discussed fire safety issues in Ponderosa and, in particular, the lack of identified emergency exits. We felt a clear plan is needed and what, if any, the committee’s role would be in this process. Two possible suggestions would be to contact the county regarding repair of Camp 12 Road to allow emergency exit on the Chumstick Hwy. Secondly, an exit at the upriver end of Saddle into the power line access road would also be beneficial. Request the board’s discussion of these options as well as a clear plan to homeowners regarding effective evacuation routes (which streets take which exit). With fire season approaching, a plan in place could avoid a potential liability.
Steve will check with Mike Bunney to identify Ponderosa Fire Dept. recommendations and/or evacuation plan strategies.
Steve Malmstead shared the board’s request for 2010 budget priorities. The committee decided to send this out for completion via email. Steve will send the request to committee members via email to request changes (additions/deletions) for the 2010 budget. This will include the need to look at possible reductions due to the economic conditions. He will contact Jeanne Whitlow and Bill Griffin with final budget request.
The committee met with Ken Severance to confirm his availability for Saturday work parties. Labor charges will be paid with Greenbelt budget. He was also open to additional days of work based on committee requests.
Volunteerism was discussed and ways to get more members involved. We shared concern that our “to –do” remained undone. John Cross shared the possibility of a Boy Scout troop volunteering to do clean-up work in the Ponderosa. He will get forms to Bill Griffin regarding their insurance and liability coverage for board discussion at their April meeting. Committee requests a decision to aid in planning summer projects.
Steve Malmstead asked about the status of our Ponderosa trail map. He’ll contact Pam Nicklas for an update at our April work party. Adding possible evacuation routes and our new trails to the map were discussed. Upon completion, we’d like a one-page map to distribute to the membership.
