WATERSHED (GREENBELT) MEETING MINUTES
for JUNE 12th, 2010

In Attendance:  Mary Bunney, Pam Nicklas, Tim Abel

Beautiful day for a... meeting?  Nice to hold court in the park this AM.  Laid out a display of Knapweed Info for curious bypassers and meeting members to peruse in hopes to educate members as to the utter worthlessness of the weed.  Did you know knapweed plants are coated in a carcinogen?  Yes!  Wash your hands before you eat anything after coming in contact.  Did you know each plant can produce over 50,000 seeds?  Did you know knapweed exudes a substance through its roots which will not allow anything but more knapweed to grow?  Yes, there is no silver lining to this invasive weed.  We spoke long on the topic and ways to eradicate... or at least thin.  Goats?  Yes, they will eat the stuff.

Our meeting was focused on noxious/invasive weeds as tis the season for such.  Only two other matters were discussed before the after-meeting weedfest:

1)  There was mention of a concern that the Greenbelt is being swallowed up by this bigger, newer Watershed Committee and, that all the hard work and history of past Greenbelt projects/work will either diminish or be buried by overfocus on the water front.  This should not be the case as the term 'watershed' defines.  The Watershed Committee is dedicated to all open spaces in the Ponderosa whether water frontage or greenbelt land.  Greenbelt projects will continue to take place, including a new bench being planted up on the Viewpoint Trail (off Lupine) this weekend (June 19th).  We need sherpas...

2) The Firesafe Zone under the powerlines continues to be a hot topic.  There are those passionate about creating one (or revitalizing the one that has been started up there) while other information tends to be conflicting in regards to purpose or need.  We've decided to table the talk of any action until some kind of definitive course of action can be clarified for us.  This is primarily based on FD #9's contradiction of a need for a fire safe zone in the Ponderosa.  We need consensus and some sort of workable plan.  So until then...

Meeting was adjourned at 10:05 AM.
